An investigation into factors influencing basal eye temperature in the domestic horse (Equus caballus) when measured using infrared thermography in field conditions

چکیده
Infrared thermography (IRT) is a popular technology used for the detection of thermal changes given its non-invasive nature and lack direct contact with individual. Accordingly, maximal eye temperature (MaxET) measured IRT has been extensively applied in equine research. However, there little information available about potential limitations MaxET field studies. Thus, aims this study were to 1) quantify individual variation conditions effects individual, breed, body size (height at withers), side, sex age, 2) determine environment operator, 3) explore relationship between rectal (RT) rest. To accomplish these aims, 791 measures from 32 horses collected Sweden five different months farms over period 12 months. There was an effect on (P < .05) varied 29.4 37.6 °C. also affected by breed (maximal difference 1.1 °C 0.3 °C, respectively) but not age height withers. significant month farm differences; 2.4 2.3 respectively), outdoor indoor measurements (0.8 °C) operators (0.2 °C). no correlations RT. These results demonstrate that observed rest their home environment, endogenous (sex breed) environmental factors (farm, location year) shows We strongly suggest should be great caution studies only under where can accurately accounted for.

15 صفحه اولPopulation viability analysis on domestic horse breeds (Equus caballus).
In this study, we performed a population viability analysis on 3 domestic horse breeds (Equus caballus) of Danish origin, namely, the Frederiksborg, the Knabstrupper, and the Jutland breeds. Because of their small population sizes, these breeds are considered endangered. The Vortex software simulation package was used for the population viability analysis. First, we investigated the future viab...
متن کاملFunctionally relevant responses to human facial expressions of emotion in the domestic horse (Equus caballus).
Whether non-human animals can recognize human signals, including emotions, has both scientific and applied importance, and is particularly relevant for domesticated species. This study presents the first evidence of horses' abilities to spontaneously discriminate between positive (happy) and negative (angry) human facial expressions in photographs. Our results showed that the angry faces induce...
متن کاملProposal to sequence the genome of the domestic horse, Equus caballus
I. Introduction and Rationale for the Project We are applying to National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) for funding to produce a draft-2X reference sequence for the genome of the horse that can be integrated with physical and genetic maps. A whole genome shotgun approach is ideal for this approximately 2.5-3.0 billion base pair genome since preliminary data suggests that the genome is...
متن کاملFISH analysis comparing genome organization in the domestic horse (Equus caballus) to that of the Mongolian wild horse (E. przewalskii).
Przewalski's wild horse (E. przewalskii, EPR) has a diploid chromosome number of 2n = 66 while the domestic horse (E. caballus, ECA) has a diploid chromosome number of 2n = 64. Discussions about their phylogenetic relationship and taxonomic classification have hinged on comparisons of their skeletal morphology, protein and mitochondrial DNA similarities, their ability to produce fertile hybrid ...
